Is peat moss really the problem?

Common feedback: “Peat moss retains too much water — it causes root rot.”
Peat holds moisture well, yes — but root rot usually happens when a pot stays wet for too long and roots can’t breathe. The issue is time + oxygen in the container, not peat alone.

So why still use peat-based substrate? (Reasons many growers overlook)

Predictable results

A consistent base means our mix recipes behave more reliably across repots — less guesswork.

More stable moisture

Helps reduce sudden dry/wet cycles that stress roots — especially for container growing.

A clean base that’s easy to tune

Peat gives a reliable foundation, then structure is adjusted (standard vs chunky) based on plant type and setup.

If your peat mix stays wet for many days: it’s usually a setup match issue — pot size, low light/airflow (indoors), watering too often (“top-ups”), or the overall mix being too fine for your environment. That’s why some plants do better with a chunkier structure and a different watering rhythm.
