Perlite is a 100% natural volcanic mineral, similar to vermiculite. It has excellent water-holding properties, but is less porous and drains better than vermiculite. It is lightweight. Expanded perlite is a soil conditioner, loosens clay soil, reduces clumping, and improves drainage and aeration. Perlite is made from silicified volcanic rock at 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit to create a sponge-like ball. Perlite is often used on its own or in a 50/50 mix with vermiculite (this mix can be too moist in some situations). Perlite can be neutral or slightly acidic, has a low pH buffering capacity, and has no cation exchange capacity. Since it is primarily white, algae can easily grow on perlite. And while it is not harmful to plants, it can clog pipes in plants' water circulation systems. Perlite is ideal for plant propagation, seed propagation. Perlite is a mineral free from weeds and diseases, clean and odorless.
