Red Holy Basil, scientifically known as Ocimum tenuiflorum, is a fragrant edible herb known for its aromatic leaves, reddish-purple stems and warm herbal scent.

It is commonly grown for teas, cooking, garnishing and home herb gardens. Red Holy Basil is also commonly known as Tulsi, and grows best in a bright, airy location with enough sunlight, regular watering and well-draining media.

  • Avoid: Overwatering and heavy, soggy media

Recommended Chaiyo Mix for Home Growing
At our Thailand nursery, we grow Red Holy Basil using VEP Mix under nursery growing conditions.

For home growing, we recommend Chaiyo Universal Substrate as a suitable potting base. If your growing area is more humid, shaded, low-airflow, or the media stays wet for too long, add Perlite or French Bark Nugget 8–15mm to improve drainage and airflow.

Adjust watering based on sunlight, airflow, heat and humidity. Red Holy Basil enjoys consistent moisture, but the media should not stay soggy.

Harvesting Tip
Snip leaves regularly to encourage bushier growth. Harvest young fresh leaves for the best aroma.
